Concrete Driveways in Macomb County, MI

Concrete Driveways · Macomb County, MI

Built for Michigan winters, from the sub-base up

A concrete driveway in Macomb County takes a beating every winter. Water soaks into the slab and expands as it freezes, and road salt rides in on every car. Delpres Services is a concrete contractor based in Harrison Township, and we work throughout Metro Detroit. We pour new concrete driveways and full replacements built for Michigan winters, each one on a proper sub-base.

Not every worn driveway has to come out, and we repair and resurface concrete where the slab is still sound. We also pour approaches and aprons where a driveway meets the road. For a decorative look, stamped and exposed aggregate concrete can take the place of a broom finish. If you are weighing concrete against asphalt, we pave asphalt driveways too.

What We Handle

  • New concrete driveways and full driveway replacements
  • Approaches and aprons where the driveway meets the road
  • Sub-base excavation and compaction, graded for drainage
  • Forms set to exact grade, with rebar or wire mesh matched to the load
  • 4 inch minimum thickness, 6 inches for heavy vehicles
  • Control joints that set where shrinkage cracks form
  • Broom, stamped or exposed aggregate finishes, sealed after proper cure time
  • Concrete repair and resurfacing when the old slab is still sound

How We Build a Concrete Driveway for Michigan Winters

Every job starts with a free on-site estimate, and the quote comes in writing. On a lot with a septic tank and drain field, the driveway layout has to work around them. The Macomb County Health Department says not to put driveways or other hard surfaces over a septic system. Before we dig, we call MISS DIG 811, which asks for at least three business days of notice.

The sub-base carries the slab. We dig it out and compact it, with the grade set so water drains away. If the lot needs more grading or fill first, that is part of our excavation and site work. Forms are then set to exact grade, and rebar or wire mesh goes in based on the load.

Concrete is poured, screeded and finished to spec. Curing begins right after finishing and typically runs 3 to 7 days, per concrete industry guidance. Sealer goes on only after proper cure time, to protect the surface from freeze-thaw cycles and road salt.

Does Your Driveway Need Concrete Repair or Replacement?

Cracked or settling concrete does not always need full replacement. Concrete industry guidance says irregular cracks are unsightly but generally do not affect the integrity of the concrete. Minor scaling, where the finished surface flakes or peels, is a cosmetic issue.

The same guidance says light to moderate scaling can be repaired with a thin resurfacing layer. That layer is only as strong as the concrete it bonds to, and it will not match the old color. Repairing heavy scaling that keeps spreading may not be feasible.

When a slab has sunk or broken apart, replacement usually makes more sense. We look at the slab and the base under it, then recommend the right fix in a written estimate. A new driveway can also be part of a bigger build with walkways and concrete steps.

What to Ask Concrete Driveway Contractors in Macomb County

Freeze-thaw damage starts with water. When saturated concrete freezes, the water expands as ice and stresses the slab. Deicing salt makes it worse, because it keeps the surface wetter and adds freeze-thaw cycles.

So ask about the mix. Concrete industry guidance recommends 4,000 psi air-entrained concrete with about 6 percent air for exterior slabs that see deicers. Millions of tiny air bubbles give the expanding ice room. Ask about thickness and joint spacing too, and get the answers in writing.

Salt from the roads rides onto your driveway on your car. The same guidance says to hose that salt off when conditions permit. It names late summer, after a few dry days, as an ideal time for a breathable sealer. We recommend resealing every 3 to 5 years.

Call (877) 633-5773, or send the form. Tell us what the job is and where it is.

2

Free On-Site Estimate

We visit the site and check the access and the ground. The estimate comes to you in writing.

3

Locates and County Steps

We call MISS DIG 811 for utility locates before any digging. On septic jobs, we line up our work with the county's soil evaluation and inspections.

4

Dig and Install

We dig to spec with equipment sized to the site. Then the work goes in to the approved plan or the agreed scope.

5

Backfill and Restore

After the required tests and inspections, we backfill and restore what we dug up. Lawns get topsoil and seed or sod, and paved areas get new concrete or asphalt.

FAQ

Concrete Driveways Questions, Answered

Common questions about concrete driveways around Macomb County and the rest of Metro Detroit. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (877) 633-5773

How thick should a concrete driveway be?
Our standard is a 4 inch minimum for a home driveway and 6 inches for heavy vehicles. Rebar or wire mesh goes in based on the loads the slab will carry. Industry guidance notes that wire mesh will not prevent cracking. It helps keep cracks and joints from opening up.
Will a new concrete driveway crack?
Concrete industry guidance says cracks cannot be prevented entirely, but control joints decide where they form. That guidance spaces joints about every 10 feet on a 4 inch slab. Each joint should run at least a quarter of the way into the slab. Panels should stay close to square, no longer than 1.5 times their width.
How much does a concrete driveway cost in Macomb County?
The price depends on your driveway, and we put it in writing after a free on-site estimate. Size and thickness drive it, along with reinforcement and removal of an old slab. Sub-base work and the finish matter too, and so does any approach at the road. For market ranges, see our guide to concrete driveway costs in Michigan.
When can you pour a concrete driveway in Michigan?
Spring through early fall is the main season, when temperatures stay consistently above 50 degrees. Fresh concrete freezes if its temperature drops below about 25 degrees. Industry guidance says to protect it from freezing for about the first two days. When a project requires a cold-weather pour, we use heated blankets and accelerated mix designs.
How do I protect a new concrete driveway from road salt?
Concrete industry guidance says to skip deicing chemicals the first winter and use clean sand for traction. After that, use deicers in moderate amounts. Michigan's concrete trade association calls plain rock salt the safest deicer for concrete. It says never to use products with calcium chloride or magnesium chloride. Fertilizer is never a deicer either: ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate attack the surface.
Do I need a permit for a driveway approach?
Often, yes. The Macomb County Department of Roads issues permits for residential approaches in its road right of way. Where an approach crosses a roadside ditch, the department sets the culvert size. Which office permits your approach depends on who owns the road, and we point you to the right one.
