Septic, Sewer, Site Work and Concrete in Dearborn Heights

Nearly half the homes in Dearborn Heights were built in the 1950s, Census survey data shows. A sewer line that old can crack or fill with roots. The city warns that sewer backups after heavy rains can affect any home here. A camera inspection shows whether a recurring backup calls for sewer line repair or sewer line replacement in Dearborn Heights.

Who Owns the Sewer Line at a Dearborn Heights Home?

In Dearborn Heights, the owner is responsible for the sewer line from the house to the main. That includes the connection to the main itself. The city is responsible for everything past that tap. Its Water and Sewer section routinely inspects and cleans the sanitary sewers.

Water lines split at the stop box instead. The owner is responsible for everything up to the stop box, including the plumbing inside. The city is responsible for the stop box and beyond, plus the water meter in the house.

Census survey data puts about four in five homes here before 1970. A sewer lead from that era may be clay pipe, and roots can work into its joints. Slow drains in several fixtures and backups that keep returning are the usual first signs.

Every dig starts with a MISS DIG 811 call at least three business days ahead. Federal soil maps show the water table rising within 3 feet of the surface across most of the city. The new pipe goes on firm bedding at the slope the plumbing code requires. Required tests are done and documented before final backfill, and the backfill is compacted in lifts.

Basement Backups and Combined Sewers in Dearborn Heights

The city names two flood-prone areas. One lies along the Rouge River in the north end, the other along Ecorse Creek in the south end. The city says it is working with the county and other agencies on flooding near Ecorse Creek. The Building Department posts the city's flood zone map.

Dearborn Heights has a north half and a south half, joined by a strip a quarter mile wide. Gulley Road is the only through road between them. Because of that shape, the city's sewage flows to two separate treatment systems. One is Wayne County's Rouge Valley system, with interceptors along the Middle and Lower branches of the Rouge River.

The city counts six areas served by combined sewers, which carry storm water and sewage in one pipe. A city-wide program to separate them was under way in early 2025. The two largest areas were done, and a third was under contract.

A backup can start in the city's main or in your own sewer lead. When backups keep returning, a camera inspection shows any breaks or roots in your line. We repair the failed section or replace the line to the tap. Water seeping through basement walls is a different problem, and exterior foundation waterproofing addresses that one.

Water Mains and Lead Service Lines in Dearborn Heights

The city says parts of its water system are at twice their service life or more. Its main breaks run two to four times the average of comparable communities. The water department sees between 200 and 250 main breaks a year, most in the colder months.

In 2025 the city began replacing five of its oldest, most break-prone stretches of water main. Two of them run along Warren Avenue and Gulley Road. Its program to replace every water meter in the city during 2025 and 2026 also inventories lead service lines.

The city's 2024 water quality report estimates about 120 lead service lines and 2,100 of unknown material. That is out of 24,739 service lines. Michigan's rule has water systems replace lead lines, including the private side, at their own expense. The current schedule runs to 2041.

Here, a city contractor replaces lead lines as needed after each new meter goes in. On the owner's side of the stop box, we repair and replace water service lines that break or leak.

Teardowns and Rebuilds on Dearborn Heights Lots

The city's 2007 master plan describes well-kept brick homes on compact lots, on streets lined with sidewalks and mature trees. It also notes older, smaller homes giving way to large new builds on many streets. Census permit data shows 13 new single-family homes authorized here in 2025.

A rebuild starts when the old house comes down. The Water Department takes service disconnection applications at City Hall and treats any later reconnection as a new tap. Our demolition and lot clearing takes the house and its foundation down to a graded lot.

The city's building permit application lists concrete driveways and approaches among its work types. The Building Department can tell you what your project needs. We pour new concrete driveways and approaches for new homes and old ones.

Questions We Hear Around Dearborn Heights

A few of the questions we hear most around Dearborn Heights. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (877) 633-5773

Who is responsible for the sewer line at my Dearborn Heights home?
The owner is, from the house up to and including the connection to the sewer main. The city is responsible for everything past that tap. We repair or replace the owner's part of the line, and a camera inspection shows where it has failed.
Why does my Dearborn Heights basement back up in heavy rain?
The city warns that sewer backups after heavy rains can affect any home here. The city counts six areas served by combined sewers, and it has been separating them. A cracked or root-filled sewer lead can add to the trouble. A camera inspection shows whether your own line is part of it.
Will the city replace my lead water service line?
Michigan's rule has water systems replace lead service lines, including the private side, at their own expense. Dearborn Heights is inventorying its service lines during its 2025 and 2026 meter replacements. A city contractor replaces lead lines as needed after each new meter. The Water Department can tell you where your line stands.
How much does sewer line replacement cost in Dearborn Heights?
The distance to the main and the depth of the line set most of the price. Pavement over the line, such as a driveway, adds restoration work. The city sets its own permit fees. We look at the job and put a free estimate in writing.
Do you clear clogged sewer lines?
That is a plumber's job, or a drain cleaner's. We repair or replace the line when the pipe itself has failed. A camera inspection shows which job you have.
