Stamped and Exposed Aggregate Concrete in Macomb County, MI

Stamped Concrete · Macomb County, MI

Decorative concrete with the look of stone or brick

Delpres Services is a stamped concrete contractor serving Macomb County and Metro Detroit. Stamped concrete gets its pattern while the surface is still soft. The finished slab looks like laid stone or brick. We pour it for patios, walkways, pool decks and front entries.

Exposed aggregate concrete is a textured, slip-resistant finish that shows the natural stone in the mix. It suits drives and walks where grip matters. Both finishes start with the same groundwork as our concrete driveways. That means a compacted sub-base and forms set to grade.

What We Handle

  • Stamped concrete patios, walkways, pool decks and front entries
  • Exposed aggregate driveways and walks with a textured, slip-resistant finish
  • Stamp patterns with the look of stone or brick
  • Colored concrete, with a release that adds a second tone
  • Compacted sub-base and forms set to grade
  • Rebar or wire mesh placed to suit the load
  • Cure time before the sealer goes on
  • Pool decks pitched to drain, with a slip-resistant finish

How decorative concrete gets its pattern and color

A stamped concrete job starts as a plain slab. We set rebar or wire mesh to suit the load. Then we pour the concrete and level it. Stamping comes next, while the surface can still take a pattern.

Integral color is mixed through the whole load before the pour. A color hardener is spread over the fresh surface and worked in instead. Its color stays in the top layer, so it looks richer. The cement and sand in it also toughen the surface.

Before the stamps go down, a release goes on so they do not stick. A colored release also leaves a second color highlight in the pattern. The leftover release is washed off before sealing. We can carry the same look up a set of concrete steps to the front door.

What is exposed aggregate concrete?

Exposed aggregate concrete has its top layer of cement paste washed away. That reveals the natural stone in the mix. A surface retarder is often sprayed on after finishing. It slows the set of the top layer only, while the slab below hardens on schedule.

Once the slab has set, the loose paste is rinsed and brushed off. The texture can range from a light sandblasted look to fully exposed stone. Either way, it gives more grip than a smooth finish.

A washed finish like this is made while the concrete is fresh, so it comes with a new pour. Exposed aggregate fits a circle drive or the ground around a fire ring. We also build outdoor kitchens and fire pits that sit on a stamped patio.

Sealing stamped concrete for Macomb County winters

Freeze-thaw cycles and road salt are hard on outdoor concrete in Michigan. They can make the top surface flake or peel, which the trade calls scaling. We let each slab cure before the sealer goes on, and the sealer helps protect against both.

Sealer goes on dry concrete, and the concrete industry's guide on scaling names late summer as the ideal time. Solvent-based sealers darken and enrich the color, while water-based sealers leave it as it is. Several light coats beat one heavy coat. We suggest a fresh coat every 3 to 5 years.

Water that stands on a slab makes freeze-thaw damage worse. So we set the forms to grade, and the finished slab is pitched to drain. That way rain and melting snow run off the surface.

4

Dig and Install

We dig to spec with equipment sized to the site. Then the work goes in to the approved plan or the agreed scope.

Backfill and Restore

After the required tests and inspections, we backfill and restore what we dug up. Lawns get topsoil and seed or sod, and paved areas get new concrete or asphalt.

FAQ

Stamped Concrete Questions, Answered

Common questions about stamped concrete around Macomb County and the rest of Metro Detroit. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

How much does stamped concrete cost?
The square footage and the pattern drive most of the price. Tearing out an old slab, extra base work, added color and steps all add to it. We look at the job and put a free estimate in writing. Call (877) 633-5773 to set one up.
Should I choose stamped concrete or exposed aggregate?
Stamped concrete suits a patio or pool deck where you want the look of stone or brick. Exposed aggregate suits a drive or walk where grip matters most. Both sit on the same groundwork, so the choice comes down to looks and use.
Is stamped concrete a good choice for a pool deck?
Yes, with the right finish. A sealed stamped surface can get slick when wet, so the trade's advice is a slip-resistant additive in the sealer. Our pool decks are pitched so water drains off. For a new pool, the deck can be part of our inground pool builds.
Can a driveway be stamped?
Yes. A driveway can take a stamped or exposed aggregate finish over the same sub-base and steel as a plain drive. Exposed aggregate gives tires and feet more grip. The decorative finish adds work at the pour, and the written quote shows it.
Can I use salt on stamped concrete?
The ready-mix industry's guide on scaling says to skip deicing salt the first winter. Use clean sand for traction, then use salt sparingly after that. Never use a deicer made with ammonium sulfate or ammonium nitrate. Many lawn fertilizers carry the same chemicals, so sweep spills off the slab.
Do you pour stamped concrete outside Macomb County?
Yes. Delpres is based in Harrison Township and works across Macomb County, Oakland County, St. Clair County and Wayne County. That takes in places such as Oakland Township and Port Huron. Jobs about 50 miles out are within our range.
