Concrete Steps and Custom Staircases in Macomb County, MI

Concrete Steps · Macomb County, MI

Even risers and solid treads up to your door

Concrete steps carry you from the walk to the front door, and in Macomb County they face a long winter. At the Selfridge weather station in Harrison Township, the low drops to freezing or below about 129 days a year. Delpres Services is based in Harrison Township and pours new concrete steps across Metro Detroit. We also build curved and custom staircases, with landings sized to the door they serve.

When old steps have sunk or pulled away from the house, we take them out and pour a new set. New steps can carry a stamped or exposed aggregate finish that matches the entry. They can also go in with a new concrete driveway and front walk.

What We Handle

  • New concrete steps for front entries and porches
  • Curved and custom staircases, such as a porch with curved steps
  • Step replacement, with the old set broken out and removed
  • Landings at the door, as wide as the door and the stairway they serve
  • A base dug out and compacted in lifts before the forms go in
  • Forms set to exact grade, with rebar or wire mesh based on the load
  • Stamped or exposed aggregate finishes that match the walk or patio
  • Sealer applied after proper cure time, against freeze-thaw and road salt

How We Build Concrete Stairs and Landings

Every job starts with a free on-site estimate, and the quote comes in writing. We measure the total rise from the walk to the door threshold. That height sets how many risers the steps need and how deep each tread can be.

Before we dig, we call MISS DIG 811 for the utility locates. Then the old steps come out, and we dig out the base for the new set. Fill goes back in lifts, and each lift is compacted before the next.

Forms are set to exact grade, and rebar or wire mesh goes in based on the load. The treads get a broom finish for grip unless the entry calls for a decorative finish. Sealer goes on only after proper cure time, to protect the steps against freeze-thaw cycles and road salt.

What Size Should Concrete Steps Be in Michigan?

The Michigan Residential Code sets the limits for steps at a home. A riser can be no taller than 8 1/4 inches, and a tread no shallower than 9 inches. In one flight, the tallest riser can top the shortest by no more than 3/8 inch.

Those numbers are the code's outer limits. A lower riser and a deeper tread make a gentler climb. They also take more room between the door and the walk. We lay out the steps and the landing to fit the space you have.

Local zoning has a say too. In Chesterfield Township, open porches and steps may project up to 8 feet into a street-facing front yard. Your township can tell you what applies to your lot.

Replacing Sunken Concrete Steps in Macomb County

Old steps tend to fail in two ways. The tread surface flakes and peels, which the trade calls scaling. Or the whole set sinks and pulls away from the house.

Sinking starts in the soil under the steps. Ground next to a basement wall is often backfill from the foundation dig. A Chesterfield Township deck handout warns about posts within three feet of a basement wall. They may rest on backfill and settle.

In Macomb Township, the concrete permit sheets call for rebar within 3 feet of a house or over disturbed soil. We look at the steps and the base under them, then recommend the right fix in a written estimate. A replacement is also a good time to add a curve or a wider landing.

FAQ

Concrete Steps Questions, Answered

Common questions about concrete steps around Macomb County and the rest of Metro Detroit. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (877) 633-5773

How much do new concrete steps cost?
The height and width of the steps drive most of the price. Curves and decorative finishes add to it, and so does tearing out an old set. We look at the entry and put a free estimate in writing. Call (877) 633-5773 to set one up.
Can you pour curved concrete steps?
Yes, curved and custom staircases are part of our concrete work. A porch with curved steps is one of our past projects. The forms are bent to the curve and set to grade before the pour. Curved treads can take a stamped or exposed aggregate finish too.
Do concrete steps need a handrail?
The Michigan Residential Code calls for a handrail on at least one side of stairs with four or more risers. The rail sits 34 to 38 inches above the tread nosing. A guard is required where a stair or landing sits more than 30 inches above the grade below. Your township building department confirms the rules for your steps.
Do I need a permit to replace front steps?
Often, yes. The Michigan Residential Code exempts some small, low patios and landings from a permit. That exemption leaves out any landing that serves a door or sits within 36 inches of the house. Your township building department decides what your project needs, and we point you there.
Do concrete steps need footings?
Some do. The Michigan Residential Code sets exterior footings 42 inches below grade, below the frost line. Whether your steps need them is the township building department's call. Footings are part of our concrete foundation work.
Can I use salt on new concrete steps?
Michigan's concrete trade association says to skip deicing chemicals the first winter and use sand for traction. After that, it names rock salt as the safest deicer for concrete. It warns never to use fertilizer as a deicer. A penetrating sealer typically needs a fresh coat every 3 to 5 years.
