Excavation Services for Residential and Commercial Sites
Site work starts with excavation and grading. We dig to spec and grade the site to the elevations on the plans. For a slab or a drive, site prep also covers the compacted sub-base under the concrete or asphalt. When an old building or slab has to come out first, our demolition work clears the lot before the dig.
Deep excavation covers basement and foundation digs for homes and light commercial buildings. Depth and soil set the plan for each dig. When the hole is ready, we can also pour the concrete foundations and footings.
Trenching covers the runs for sewer laterals, water service lines, storm drains and septic lines. When an old lateral fails, the trench is the first step of a sewer line replacement. When surface water needs a way off the site, we tie the grade into a storm drain or catch basin.
How an Excavation Contractor Plans a Dig in Macomb County
Every job starts with a site assessment of the scope and the access. We call MISS DIG 811 for locates and check the marks for utility conflicts before we dig. If trees stand in the way, a tree service clears them first.
Michigan law calls for a dig notice to MISS DIG at least three business days before excavation starts. When a contractor does the digging, the call is the contractor's job. Each contractor that digs on a site files its own notice. Locators mark only the approximate location of their lines, and the depth stays unmarked.
The law also sets a caution zone of 48 inches on either side of each mark. Inside it, marked lines get exposed by soft excavation, such as hand digging, before a machine goes in. If an unmarked line shows up, the law calls for a stop nearby and an immediate new notice.
What Happens to Your Yard After the Dig?
We protect the surrounding property while the dig is open. Soil disposal is part of the job, so extra soil leaves the site.
Final backfill waits until any required test or inspection on the work below is done. Backfill then goes back in lifts, and each lift gets compacted before the next one goes on. Compaction in lifts helps prevent the settling that shows up later as a dip over a trench.
Then we restore what the dig touched. A lawn gets topsoil and seed or sod. We pour concrete and pave asphalt as well, so a cut drive or walk gets restored by the same company.
